Increasing Average Order Value with a Custom Bundle Builder.

For a lot of Shopify brands, increasing traffic is usually the main focus when trying to grow revenue. But in reality, improving your average order value (AOV) can often have a much bigger impact without increasing ad spend at all.

One of the best ways to do this is through product bundling.

Product bundles have become a huge focus for ecommerce brands in 2026 because they encourage customers to purchase multiple products together, while also making the buying experience feel more personalised and higher value. Multiple ecommerce studies now suggest that well-implemented product bundles can increase AOV anywhere from 20–35% depending on the industry and bundle strategy being used.

Recently, I worked on a custom bundle builder feature for a Shopify apparel store. The goal was simple: allow customers to create their own product bundle with different products, colours, sizes and quantities, all while receiving a discount for purchasing multiple items together.

The issue with most standard Shopify bundle solutions is that they often treat the bundle as a single product. While this works on the surface, it creates problems for inventory tracking, reporting and fulfilment because the merchant loses visibility of the individual SKUs included in the order.

To solve this, I built a custom bundle product template powered by FoxSell for the backend bundle functionality and discount management within the cart. The solution allowed the merchant to still create a single bundle product experience while keeping full tracking of the individual products and SKUs inside Shopify.

From the customer side, the experience feels much more flexible and interactive. Instead of adding a fixed pre-made bundle, they can build their own combination directly on the product page. For example:

  • 1 white top in large
  • 2 brown shorts in medium
  • 1 cream hoodie in x-large

All within a single discounted bundle.

This type of mix-and-match bundle works especially well for apparel brands because customers naturally purchase across sizes, colours and matching products. It also reduces friction in the buying process by keeping everything within a single flow rather than forcing the customer to visit multiple product pages.

One of the biggest advantages of improving AOV is that it increases revenue without relying on more traffic or higher marketing spend. Shopify brands are putting far more focus on this in 2026, especially as customer acquisition costs continue to rise.

A well-built bundle system not only improves revenue per order, but also creates a much better customer experience when done properly.
